Victoria is the name given to the medieval city of Gozo in 1887. It was in this same year that Victoria became to be known as City of Gozo. However, the word Rabat is still very popular. Victoria includes ic-Cittadella, the old city as well as Rabat. Rabat mean suburb. The first time we come across this name is in a notarial deed by Andrea de Benjamin of the 12th of February 1455 by the name of RABBATUM. The motto of the locality is – A magna maxima – which means from large to the highest.

The coat of arms of Victoria shows three hills on a blue background, with a golden streak with the letters VR red, upon all this there’s the façade of bastions with four watchtowers and a door altogether forming a crown.

A very famous city in the Maltese Islands is Victoria in Gozo. Ir rabat is the capital city of Gozo and is known for its medieval Citadel. In which we find the Great Castle, Museums and the Old Prison. Victoria or Città Vittoria is the capital city of the island of Gozo, an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The town has a population of 6,414 (November 2005), and with this population it is the largest in Gozo.
This city is also called by the name Victoria which was given in 1887 by the British government on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, at the request of the Archbishop of Malta, Mons. Peter Pace. However, this city is still known among the Gozo people by the old name of Rabat.
